MechSE is Science and Engineering

In 2006, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign combined its mechanical engineering and theoretical mechanics departments into one science-based department: the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering (MechSE). This science-based approach makes it easier for us to collaborate and address societal needs.

Strength through connections

MechSE builds strength through connections that link members of the department with each other, with researchers outside the department, and with the world around them. These ties unite theoretical mechanics with mechanical engineering, science with engineering, and education with research in an effort to address the most critical needs of society.

Addressing societal needs

To have the greatest impact on the world around them, MechSE faculty have aligned their research efforts with six societal needs: security and defense, energy, environment, health and bio, manufacturing and transportation.
