Microstructure and Properties of Natural and Synthetic Biomaterials, Biocomposites, and Interfaces
Successful tissue engineering strategies will require careful characterization of the native tissue and the materials that will replace them as well as interactions between these materials. The complex microstructures in tissues like bone, tendon, and skin, as examples, can present significant experimental and computational challenges. This symposium focuses on the characterization and modeling of natural tissue, synthetic replacement materials, and composites of these materials. Studies on interfacial and heterogeneous tissues (such as osteochondral tidemark regions, tendon and ligament insertion points into bone, scaffold/tissue interfaces ) as well as the development of biomaterials appropriate as analogs of the extracellular matrix for tissue engineering applications are welcome. Work describing experimental or modeling approaches and, in particular, interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of engineering, science and medicine, are also welcome. Potential topics may include microstructural and propertiy characterization of tissues and biomaterials for tissue engineering applications, studies of growth and remodeling, optimization, multi-scale modeling, novel characterization methods, and other.
