Complex Fluids
Complex fluids are a broad class of materials that are viewed as homogeneous at the macroscopic scale and disordered at the microscopic scale, but possess structure at an intermediate scale. Examples include colloidal suspensions, blood, and polymeric solutions. Complex fluids exhibit many useful properties stemming from the variety of structures at the intermediate scale. They are also "soft", in the sense that they flow or distort easily in response to shear or other external forces; their macroscopic flow is strongly determined by the fluid's microstructure.
A symposium is proposed to explore the foundations and latest research on complex fluids under the action of different external (and internal) forces. The symposium will also explore the flow of complex fluids in micro and nano-conduits, where confinement effects can play an important role. Examples of topical research areas include colloidal suspensions, non-Newtonian fluid mechanics (e.g. elastic instabilities), biofluid mechanics, multiphase flows (emulsions & foams), jamming, and rheology.
