Shape Memory Alloys - Mechanisms, Multifunctionalities, and Applications

Recent advances in the development of novel shape memory materials and innovative fabrication approaches have stimulated new opportunities and applications, at the same time brought about more issues and questions to tackle with. Thus, the goal of this symposium is to bring the research community together to share the recent developments in the field and evolving topics and opportunities. The symposium focuses on conventional shape memory alloys (SMAs), shape memory polymers, ferromagnetic SMAs, high temperature SMAs, and Ni free biomedical SMAs in several forms including bulk, thin film, wire and porous. It presents recent experimental, computational, and theoretical advances in processing, characterization, multiscale modeling, and device applications of these materials, as well as improved understanding of the underlying processes and mechanisms. The symposium aims to provide opportunities for close interactions among the experimental and theoretical researchers. The topics include, but not limited to: computational/experimental material design and microstructure optimization for property improvements; novel synthesis techniques; material response to external thermal, mechanical and magnetic conditions; mechanics and multiscale modeling of constitutive behavior, new multifunctionalities and applications, material degradation and failure under cyclic loadings.
