Fluid-Structure Interaction
Classical mechanics often treats the dynamics of solids and fluids as separate phenomena. In reality they are coupled at the fluid-solid interface such that the dynamics of the resulting system strongly depend on the amount of coupling between the two phases. Recent investigations of biological systems and of compliant structures subjected to unsteady fluid loads have illuminated the need for (i) an increased understanding of the relevant physics of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) over a wide parameter range of solid and fluid properties, and for (ii) increasingly robust and flexible algorithms for the accurate numerical prediction of FSI. The objective of this symposium is to bring together researchers, both computationalists and experimentalists, working on a variety of FSI problems to discuss the current state-of-the-art of algorithms and physical understanding and to highlight necessary future advances in both.
